Butt Boy: Film Review

The title struck as a little strange, but the content is bizarre.

This 2019 film starring Tyler Cornack, also the director/writer, and Tyler Rice goes beyond the world of weird, or as the New York Times put it compulsion as comic noir.  It’s categorised as a science-fiction thriller but when watched, it’s hard to put into words exactly what niche it falls into.

In the opening scenes, it’s easily misunderstood as a sexually themed film. The audience is left no other position apart from assuming the main character has a need he must gratify. Items like the remote seem a logical choice to insert into his rectum. When these choices progress to more random things, such as small dogs, a thick fog of confusion absorbs us. As the supporting characters, particularly a stereotypical detectives, begin wondering what’s happening the plot line develops. This film will leave more question than answers.

The development of the narrative is poor, the tale keeps our grip with the audacity of the ideas presented. It is beyond belief – abstract action so unrealistic it’s intriguing… It is difficult to get into but impossible to stop watching. Whether it’s from anticipation of what odd object will next be inserted inside of his rectum or if anyone will find out the addictive behaviour he is consumed by. Rotten Tomatoes rated this film between 66% out of 100% (audience) and 70% (tomato-metre).

Nothing is too far these days. If the comical and strange is up your alley then tune into Butt Boy for a wild ride stuffed with questions, confusion and down right outrageous action.
Definitely not a family film to share with the children or dear little Granny.
It’s more of a late-night-laugh for reconnecting with your friends. The less vanilla one only! Why not try a social distance movie night? Grab a bottle of red, snuggle on the sofa and call your besties on video chat for a catch up with a twist.

If you’re not the kind of person thrilled by the unusual, excited by the eccentric and pulled in the the purely perculiar, then do not watch this film.
For everyone else who adores the abnormal, get on your device and hit play now.
